"As Far As You Want To Go"
"Walgreens steady store growth has made us "the youngest 107-year-old retailer in America," and the dedication of our over 240,000 employees keeps us the nation's leading drugstore chain in sales." It's been a long time since we were a small, family-run business, but our tradition of fairness, trust, and honesty still guides us and preserves a strong sense of unity and commitment. And as our company continues to grow, the diversity and talent of our workforce grows with us.
Former Walgreen Co. Chairman David W. Bernauer believes deeply in the benefits of broad and inclusive recruiting practices:
"…What a powerful business advantage this is. The diverse folks moving up through our ranks bring to Walgreens an understanding of the many customer groups we're committed to serving better. These employees' unique cultures and experiences are essential to our future success."
Here are just a few of the programs we invest in as a part of our commitment to be the best employer for today's workforce:
- We grow partnerships with organizations such as InRoads, the largest not-for profit source of salaried corporate and retail internships for high performing ethnically diverse college students.
- We conduct campus recruitment for graduates and interns at Historically Black Colleges and Universities, Hispanic-Serving Institutes, and predominatly female colleges.
- We engage in local recruitment with community groups, congregations, and schools.
- We maintain an internal "Job Opportunity Program" through which Walgreen employees can express interest in opportunities within the company.
- At our specially designed South Carolina and Connecticut distribution centers, we plan to employ a workforce that includes a number of people with physical and mental disabilities. A new Web site, WalgreensOutreach.com is accessible to people with disabilities and provides information to help potential employees understand what work will be like at these new distribution centers.
