"I am thoroughly convinced that the diversity of our workplaces across America and Puerto Rico adds to the strength and value of our company.""Diversity has a multiplicity of definitions and meanings. It has been my great fortune to work for Walgreens for almost 40 years, and the richest part of this four-decade experience has been the opportunity to work with great people from vastly varying backgrounds. As a district manager, I have managed in four major markets (Chicago, Houston, Jackson and New Orleans) with significantly different cultures, ideas, economics, politics, etc. Then, I worked through one of the nation's worst disasters, Hurricane Katrina, which brought with it massive devastation and changes beyond our wildest dreams; truly one of the most different experiences for me and for Walgreens. Katrina brought cultural changes to New Orleans: Thousands of Spanish-speaking people migrated to New Orleans drawn by the dream of a better life. I am pleased, but not surprised Walgreens was able to adapt to the population change and meet the needs of our new customers.
While recruiting at one of the Historical Black Colleges and Universities recently, the question I was asked most often by students was, "How does your company handle diversity in the workplace?" I told the students that we must foster an environment that delights in differences. I am thoroughly convinced that the diversity of our workplaces across America and Puerto Rico adds to the strength and value of our company. Again, I am grateful to have spent a career with a company that continues to adjust to many and differing challenges that we face daily, and which understands that it takes all kinds of people to meet these challenges."
