"Statement from our Chairman and CEO"From the June day in 1901 when our founder opened his first store on Chicago's South Side, Walgreens has served a diverse customer base and employed a diverse workforce. From Baltimore to San Francisco, from Minneapolis to San Juan, our stores reflect their unique neighborhoods in the languages spoken, the customs observed and the merchandise sold.
Near the beginning of our corporate life, Charles Walgreen Sr. wrote the Walgreen Creed: "We believe that honest goods can be sold to honest people by honest methods." He went on to describe the Walgreen virtues of courtesy, kindness, generosity, cheer, friendship and honest competition. This is the Walgreen Way, and it is open to everyone.
On a personal level, I've been immersed in diverse cultures from the get-go. I grew up in the Southwest United States. As I've lived and worked in places like Tucson, Albuquerque, Texas and now, Chicago, I've been surrounded by people who are not the same as I. And I'm not speaking just of skin color and nationality. The differences reflect religion, age, gender, ability, income and more. These differences are not good, not bad, just different, and very powerful when we take time to understand and learn from each other. We all see the world a bit differently and that's fascinating. Without multiple viewpoints, how can we possibly offer the millions who walk through our doors each day the products and service they expect?
